Timed Race
Although some other breeds participate in races and dog agility competitions, Greyhounds are well-known for racing. The dogs chase an artificial hare or other lure until they reach the finish line. The Greyhound is able to run at about 40 mph and has a strong chase instinct. Greyhounds range in height from 27 to 30 inches and weigh between 60 and 80 pounds depending on their gender. The speed of Greyhounds is largely attributed to their build, the size of the heart, muscle response time, and ability to flex the spine.
Distance and Speed
In some cases, dogs that are fast may also be raced over vast distances in competitions such as the Itidarod. The Itidarod covers 1,150 miles in Alaska. The race begins in Anchorage and goes through mountains, frozen rivers, forests and tundra to Nome. Competitors cover the mileage in about 10 to 17 days. The dogs in the Iditarod and other dogsled races started with the Inuit Sled Dogs, but now include crossbreeds with the Siberian husky, German shepherd, wolves and other breeds. The dogs chosen for distance racing must not only have the aptitude for speed, but also be able to endure travel over long distances and have a desire to run. The dogs normally weigh between 45 to 55 pounds.
Alternative Dogs
Although the Greyhound and race dogs like the Siberian Husky are well-known for their speed and endurance, other dogs are often overlooked in regards to their speed. Hounds, such as the Afghan Hound and Pharaoh Hound, Salukis, Cattle Dogs, Whippets and other breeds are also known for their speed and agility. Fast dogs are often used in hunting and rounding up livestock, such as cattle.
Wild Dog
African Wild Dogs hunt in packs and pursue their prey over long distances. Pack members normally hunt large mammals, but if hunting alone, they may pursue smaller rodents. The African Wild Dog, though not a domesticated breed, is known for being faster than the Greyhound and has clocked speeds of 40 to 60 mph.
