Things That Bobcats Can Do

The bobcat belongs to the lynx genus. A bobcat is a medium sized animal, about twice the size of a domesticated cat. Male bobcats are larger and heavier than female bobcats. Bobcats are mainly active in twilight, making them "crepuscular." Crepuscular creatures perform most of their activities at dusk or dawn and sometimes in nights with plenty of moonlight.
  1. Mark Territory

    • One thing that bobcats do is mark their territory. The activities of a given bobcat will be defined by a certain boundary. The size of the area that a bobcat considers its territory will depend on the size of the animal, the terrain and the population of food for the bobcat. The territory can range from two to seven miles. The bobcat will scent mark its territory with urine and feces. The bobcat can also claw markings in to trees as a way of designating its space.

    Take Shelter

    • Although a bobcat will roam an area between two and seven miles, it will also make a permanent spot as its home base. This spot can be a cave, a spot under rocky ledges, a hollowed tree or under a thicket of brush. The bobcat will use this space as a den, where the bobcat eats and sleeps. Although the bobcat has a primary den, it will often have auxiliary spaces in its territory for shelter.

    Hunt

    • Bobcats hunt for their food. The marked territory of the bobcat is its hunting range. The most prominent food sources for bobcats are rodents, rabbits and hares. Bobcats will also eat fish, large insects, birds and squirrels if its primary food source is scarce. They can also kill and eat larger animals like deer and goats. Bobcats are predatory in nature. They will stalk their kill from up to 20 feet away before attacking. Bobcats can go long periods without eating but eat heavily when there is abundant prey.

    Reproduce

    • Bobcats live for six to eight years as solitary creatures. Bobcats reproduce in the summer and procreate throughout their lives. Both males and females mate with several different partners. A couple will mate for several weeks, stalking the same territory together in the process. The female will give birth in the den, delivering between one and six young. The female will then rear the young on her own. Within a few months, the young will start to hunt on their own and disperse to make their own territory.
