Types of Brushes for Grooming a Horse

A beautifully groomed horse is an impressive sight. Caretakers use brushing to make the coats of horses smooth and glossy. This brushing not only is cosmetic, it also contributes to the horse's well-being by keeping them clean and healthy. A number of brush types are used in this process.
  1. Rubber Curry Brush

    • The rubber curry brush should be used first in the grooming process. This flat, paddle shaped brush straps to your hand. Moved across the horse in circular motions, it helps to loosen and remove dirt and excess hair from beneath the upper coat of the animal.

    Dandy Brush

    • The dandy brush is a hard bristled brush used in brisk sweeping motions to remove dirt and hair further from the horse's coat. Strokes with this brush will produce a visible extraction of debris that was not as evident with the rubber curry brush.

    Body Brush

    • The body brush is soft-bristled and pressed flat over the horse's coat. Though it also removes some dirt, its main purpose is to flatten out the horse's hair, and create a shiny texture and appearance.

    Mane and Tail Care

    • The mane and tail also contain hair that must be cared for. The mane comb technically is not a brush, but it is an important part of caring for your horse's hair. Your horse's tail should be brushed using the dandy brush. Gently using each of these items will give your horse a head to toe shine.
