How to Locate Buried Clams

Digging for clams can be an entertaining way to spend a day at the beach, but to be successful you must know what you're looking for. Clams live below the surface of the sand, but they must break the surface to find nourishment. You'll notice a small hole where the clam came to the surface or used a siphon to access the water. This is called a "clam show."

Instructions

    • 1

Stand at the water's edge and observe the sand as the water recedes from the shore. Look for small holes in the sand.

    • 2

Evaluate the hole to determine whether it was made by a clam. Clams can make round or keyhole depressions in the sand, or holes with raised edges that look like dimples.

    • 3

Pound down on the sand next to the hole with your foot or a shovel. Notice whether water rises from the hole. If so, there is likely a clam under the surface.
