How to Measure Your Pony for a Saddle

Buying a saddle for a pony or horse can be tricky. Since there is no industry standard on sizing or measuring methods, the sizes of mass-produced saddles can vary considerably. Saddle makers use angles or tree widths to measure how wide a saddle should be. The best option for pony owners is to have a custom-built saddle made for each pony in the stable. This guarantees a comfortable fit for the pony and a comfortable and stable ride for the rider.

Instructions

    • 1

Walk your pony for a few steps. Take note of where the shoulder blades rotate as the pony walks. The shoulder blades can also be found by feeling for the heavy bone just below the pony's withers.

    • 2

Place two fingers below the shoulder blade. This is where the measurement for a saddle starts.

    • 3

Bend the wire over the withers. It should bend right at the edge of the pony's shoulder blade. Press the wire firmly against the pony's side so it stays in place when you remove it.

    • 4

Carefully place it on a flat surface and measure the distance between the two ends.

    • 5

Repeat steps one through four, every four inches along the pony's back until you reach the front of the back legs. Show the measurements to the salesperson or, in the case of a custom-built saddle, to the individual crafting the saddle.
