How to Help Eurasian Lynxes

Eurasian lynxes once had a range extending throughout Europe, Russia and central Asia. The species is now mainly limited to northern Europe, with scattered populations elsewhere, although it is not classed as endangered. Some local populations are on the edge of extinction. The causes of the decline are primarily habitat destruction, hunting for the fur trade or because of a perceived threat to livestock. Their ecological role as a top predator is an important one and efforts are ongoing to protect their remaining habitat.

Instructions

Raise awareness. On of the biggest problems large carnivores have is their public image. People still view them as dangerous and a threat to livestock, despite the threat lynx pose being minimal. Education through posters, community projects and school activities is one way to help people get a more realistic idea of the animals, and so be both less likely to shoot them and more likely to support conservation projects. Either organize your own projects with community or youth groups, or join a local conservation charity.

Report the sale of lynx fur. It is illegal to trap lynx or sell their fur in most of Europe, but this doesn't stop it happening. If you come across lynx products for sale, online or in markets, report to the appropriate authorities, usually the police for the country in question. Taking photos provides useful evidence, if you can do so discreetly. If you become aware of illegal hunting in your area, do not take matters into your own hands and approach those involved. Instead record all you know and contact the police or an animal charity.

Adopt a lynx. Large animal charities have schemes whereby you symbolically adopt an animal and the funds go towards their conservation, supporting habitat restoration, reintroduction and education projects. Lynx adoption packages also make good gifts for cat lovers.
