How to Identify Texas Anole Lizards

The anole lizard is a small lizard that grows to be about 8 inches in length and is found in warm, subtropical climates throughout the southern United States. There are two types of anole lizard found in the state of Texas, the green anole and the brown anole. The green anole is native to Texas, while the brown anole is an invasive species that has been living in the southern United States for decades.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the shape of the lizard. Anoles are between 6 and 8 inches long and are very slender with pointed heads and long, thin toes. They are quick and skittish, much like various small geckos that are found in Texas. A key difference in distinguishing between native gecko species and Texas anole lizards is to look at the toes, as gecko toes have round pads on the ends.

    • 2

Observe the color of the anole. Green anoles can appear yellow, bright green, gray or brown and are sometimes called American chameleons because like the chameleon, they can change colors. Brown anoles are always brown.

    • 3

Look under the anole's throat. Male green anole lizards have a dewlap, which is an extra piece of pink to red skin under their throat that stretches out as a display of aggression or to attract a mate.

    • 4

Observe the habitat where the lizard has been found. Green and brown anole lizards can be found sunning themselves on rocks or tree branches during the day, and will live in areas where there is a steady supply of their favorite foods, including moths, crickets, spiders and cockroaches. Because of their ability to camouflage themselves by changing colors, it can be difficult to spot anole lizards. In Texas, anoles can usually be found in backyards, on trees, in fences and in shrubs.
