How to Preserve an Elk's Antler Color

The challenge for anyone who enjoys camping and hunting is to recreate the experience when upon returning home. One of the best ways to remind yourself of a hunting escapade is with a set of antlers. While there is really nothing that can maintain the natural beauty of elk antlers permanently, several kinds of treatment can be applied to prolong the color and look of your trophy.

Things You'll Need

  • Piece of rag or cloth
  • Paint that matches or approximates the color of the antler
  • Paintbrush
  • Matte finish sealer
  • Walnut stain or other gel stain product

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the antlers using your rag to free them of dust or other impurities.

    • 2

Use your paintbrush to apply white primer to areas that have lost their color.

    • 3

Paint areas where you applied the primer with a light but steady blend of paint. Paint in a small area that isn't so visible first to help you blend the color to match the natural antler color.

    • 4

Apply the gel stain by painting it on the antlers, then wiping off the excess quickly with a cloth.

    • 5

Spray the antlers with the sealer to preserve your work.
