How to Preserve a Deer Head for Taxidermy

You've hunted all season and finally took a shot that found it's mark: a seven-point buck. If you want to preserve your treasure for years to come take the deer head to your local taxidermist to be mounted, but take care to preserve it well so it doesn't spoil or get damaged before he has a chance to work with it. Spoilage and freezer burn are your two main concerns, but can easily be prevented with just a few proactive steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe all fluids and blood from your deer head with a cloth rag. You want your deer head to be as dry as possible, because any moisture could breed mold, mildew and bacteria, which will damage the hide.

    • 2

Roll up the cape or loose-hanging hide and tuck it close to the rest of the deer head. The fur side should be facing out, with the skin safely tucked away to prevent freezer burn.

    • 3

Place the deer head in a garbage bag and seal it tightly, with no air leaks.

    • 4

Put the bagged deer head in a second garbage bag and draw it closed so no air can enter and cause the head to suffer freezer burn.

    • 5

Take the deer head immediately to your taxidermist or put it in your freezer right away. Getting the deer head cool as quickly as possible will keep bacteria from growing and destroying your trophy.
