Instructions
Identify the behavior you want to reinforce or eliminate in your macaw. If you want to eliminate a behavior, then consider its opposite --- for example, if you do not want your macaw to bite, reward it when you touch it and it does not bite you.
Reward your macaw with food when it performs the desired action. If you touch the macaw and it does not bite you, give it food. If you want it to speak and it speaks, give it a snack.
Repeat the phrase you want your macaw to speak daily if you are trying to train it to speak. (Make sure that television programming or music is not playing in the background.) If the macaw speaks something close to the phrase or word, reward it. If the macaw backslides and pronounces the word or phrase worse next time, withhold the reward until it shows improvement.
Reinforce good behavior by praising the macaw in a high voice as if you were talking to a dog.
