How to Set an Opossum Free

Opossums resemble large rats, with whitish and gray fur, large hairless ears and a long, hairless tail. However, they are marsupials and are not related to rats. Opossums are scavengers and will eat a variety of foods. They will dig through garbage bins and compost piles to find food. Opossums are usually nocturnal and may make a daytime den under your home or in a barn or shed. When their habits make opossums unwelcome, trapping is one solution. If caught in a box-style trap, release the opossum as soon as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on leather gloves and move the trap to the release site. Keep all other people and animals out of sight.

    • 2

Lift the trap door and place the rock or stick under one corner so the door is propped open. The door only needs to be open 1 inch -- the opossum will push the door open.

    • 3

Move to the closed end of the trap to encourage the opossum toward the door.

    • 4

If the opossum does not exit the trap, leave the area and return in a few minutes. If he is still there, leave the area and return in several hours.
