How to Make a Wingbone Call

Turkey wingbone calls have been used by Native Americans for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years. Wild turkeys often mistake a good wingbone call with that of a mating call from another turkey. This type of call does not necessarily have to made out of a wingbone. Almost any hollow tube will work. It is, however, much more exciting to make the call for your next turkey shoot out of the actual bones from the previous turkey shoot. Additionally, it uses part of the animal that would otherwise go to waste.

Instructions

    • 1

With a sharp knife, cut all feathers off a turkey wing: Firmly grasp the feathers with one hand and saw off the feathers with the other, cutting as close to the wing bones as possible.

    • 2

Once the feathers are gone, you'll be able to see the three sections of the wing. Find the middle section, the part of the wing that is composed of two bones, not just one. Remove it by grasping the middle bones and the large bone attached to the bird. Bend the middle bones so that the joint between the two bones breaks. Do not break the bones, however. Finish this part of the job by using the knife to sawing them apart. Do the same for the smaller bone that attaches on the other side.

    • 3

Grasp the two middle bones, insert the knife between them and sever the connection that holds the two bones on either end. That gives you two, fully intact, wing bones.

    • 4

Scrape the knife back-and-forth along the bones to scrape off as much meat as possible.

    • 5

Cut off the ball of bone at the end of each bone by sawing with the knife. That will produce two bones that each resemble a hollow tube.

    • 6

Push wire into one end of a bone and run it through to the other. Pull the wire back and forth inside the bone to push out as much of the marrow as possible. Do the same with the other bone until each is nearly hollow.

    • 7

Bring pot of water to a boil on stove top and add a tablespoon of dish-washing detergent. Place the hollowed-out bones in the boiling water, and cook until all the marrow is gone.

    • 8

Remove bones from water. Push the smaller bone inside the bigger bone so that the two form one tightly connected piece. Blow into the wingbone and listen to the call.
