How to Compress Suet Cakes for Wild Birds

Suet cakes are a form of bird food typically used during the winter. You can buy the cakes from a store, or you can make your own. Instructions

    • 1

Heat 1 1/2 cups of each lard and peanut butter in a saucepan on a stove over low heat.

    • 2

Stir the mixture with a spoon until it becomes completely liquid.

    • 3

      Turn off the stove.

    • 4

Add three cups whole oats, three cups cornmeal, 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour and half a cup of sugar to the saucepan and stir. If the mixture becomes too difficult to stir, try adding some more lard.

Pour the mixture into an inch-deep baking pan.

    • 6

Set the baking pan aside until the suet cools and solidifies.

    • 7

Cut the hardened suet into block cakes matching the dimensions of your suet bird feeder.
