How to Install Torsion Axles on Horse Trailers

Torsion axles offer more cushioning for your horses as they travel in a trailer than leaf-spring axles. In addition, these axles rarely need maintenance after installation, making them cost-effective and efficient. They also provide a shock-free ride that is quiet and practical, and they can offer a gain in load-carrying capacity as well. Installing a torsion axle on your horse trailer is a moderately easy process, but axles are relatively heavy so you may need a friend to assist you in the process.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the lug nuts on the horse trailer tires using your tire iron.

    • 2

Lift the horse trailer with your jack. Place jack stands underneath the frame and axle. You must ensure that the trailer is stable and supported by the jack stands before you begin to work underneath it.

    • 3

Finish removing the lug nuts with the tire iron. Take the tires off and place them off to the side. Keep track of the lug nuts.

    • 4

Use your 1/2-inch ratchet and socket set to remove the four bolts holding the axle in place.

    • 5

Disconnect the brake line from the horse trailer's axle, using your brake line wrench. Be careful not to strip the sides of the brake lines.

    • 6

Remove the axle, which is very heavy. After unbolting the axle and disconnecting the break line, the axle should roll out easily from under the trailer. Note the position of the axle under the horse trailer, as the new torsion axle will need to be placed in the exact same position.

    • 7

Install the new torsion axle by sliding it into place and supporting it with jack stands. Secure the axle into place by tightening the four bolts of the setup with your 1/2-inch ratchet and socket set.

    • 8

Reconnect and tighten the brake lines using your brake line wrench. Remount the tires, using the tire iron to tighten the lug nuts and secure the tire on the wheel assembly. Remove the jack stands and lower the horse trailer to the ground with the jack.
