How do I Install a Nu-Clear Canister Filter?

If you have a small pond or home aquarium system larger than 50 gallons, a separate canister filter, like many of Inland Sea's Nu-Clear models, is often installed to fine-tune the water you're sending to your fish, whether you intend to sell them or admire them. Located near the pond or aquarium, filters of varying types can add carbon to all fish environments; biological additives for pond or saltwater environments; and filter impurities to improve fish health. Installing one is easy.

Things You'll Need

  • Hacksaw
  • Soft-bristled brush
  • Tubing or pipe and connectors compatible with your Nu-Clear model and application
  • Utility knife or hacksaw (for cutting tubing or pipe)
  • Screwdriver set

Instructions

    • 1

Twist the knob on your filter canister's lid clamp counterclockwise until the clamp is loose enough to remove. Pull the lid and filter from the canister and inspect them for impurities that can be washed clean with running water and a soft-bristled brush. Secure a clean filter in your canister, replace the lid and clamp, and twist the clamp knob clockwise to waterproof the seal.

    • 2

Find a level area near your pond or aquarium on which to place your Nu-Clear filter.

    • 3

Turn off water supply to your pond, or unplug any filters currently working in your tank.

    • 4

Cut tubing or pipe --- depending on whether you're installing in an aquarium or pond --- with a utility knife or hacksaw, to a length that will reach from the filter to separate locations in your tank or pond, spots that aren't directly against the bottom. Most new filter systems come with compatible tubing, but an appliance store will carry the sizes necessary to connect with your intake and outtake ports.

    • 5

Twist each tube or pipe onto the filter's separate intake and outtake port connectors. If you cut your own tubing or pipe, you may need to buy an adapter.

    • 6

Clamp the intake and outtake tubing to the ports with the screwdriver clamps supplied with the filter.

    • 7

Plug your filter into the outlet power and the intake port should begin taking in water, filtering it, then sending fish-ready water to your tank or pond.
