How to Process Algae

Alternative, more sustainable sources of fuel are gaining popularity over traditional fossil fuels as an attempt to conserve the environment. Algae is a source of fuel for biodiesel engines, but it must first be processed, which means the oil from the algae must be extracted before it can be used as a fuel source in any capacity. Algae grows very quickly, making it a viable source of sustainable fuel.

Instructions

    • 1

Harvest or purchase the algae you plan on processing. You may harvest up to 90 percent of your grown algae as it will reproduce quickly each day.

    • 2

Place your harvested algae into a tub of water. Pour the oil extraction enzymes into the tub of water and mix completely. Refer to the enzyme labeling for the correct amount to mix with water and algae.

    • 3

Allow the mixture to sit for a few hours, or as stated on the enzyme's labeling. Over time, the cell walls of the algae will break down and the oil will extract and separate from the water forming on the surface of the water.

    • 4

Separate the oil from the water and place the oil into an oil container for later use. When ready to use, pour the oil into your biodiesel processor and run like normal.
