Tools Used in Zoology

Zoology is the study of species that belong to the animal kingdom. Zoologists study the structure, physiology, evolution, scientific classification and behavior of animals. Zoologists normally specialize in a single group of animals, like fish, snakes and mammals. Zoologists use different tools to study animals.
  1. Magnifying Glass

    • A magnifying glass is a convex lens used magnify objects. Magnifying glass is used in zoology to magnify tiny animals. Simple magnifying glass can provide about twice or three times the normal-size magnification. Powerful magnifying glass can provide up to 10 times magnification. Magnifying glasses are used to observe species in their natural habitats. They are used to study the body structure of animals and the animals' interaction with the surroundings.

    Binoculars

    • Binoculars are a pair of identical telescopes allowing the user to view far-away objects. Zoologists use them to observe animals in their natural habitats. Zoologists use binoculars when they want to observe animals without disturbing their behavior. Zoologists use binoculars to study animal behavior, group dynamics and interaction.

    Sporting Traps

    • Sporting traps include animal traps, culvert traps, foot snares and mist nets. These are traps used to trap animals. Mist nets are used to trap birds, and wild bats and other flying animals. Mist nets are made of nylon and resemble a volleyball net. They are almost invisible, and their size depends on the size of the animal to be captured. Foot snares are used to trap animals like foxes and wolves. Culvert traps are mostly used to trap bears.

    Water Samplers

    • Water samplers include Benthic samplers, ekman dredges, multiplate samplers and Secchi disks. Water samplers are used to study the composition of water in lakes, ponds, rivers and oceans. They are used to collect water samples without human contamination.

    Specimen Collectors

    • Specimen collectors include scintillation vials, specimen collection containers and water sample collection containers. Scintillation vials are made of plastic or glass, and are used to collect liquid samples. Specimen collection containers are used to store specimens. Water sample collection containers are used to collect and store water samples from different habitats.

    Entomological Equipment

    • Entomological equipment is used to collect, store and preserve insects. Entomological equipment includes insect storage box, insect cabinet, insect stretching board, insect net, insect light trap, insect cages, inoculation chamber, corcyra cage and egg-laying cage. Insect stretching board is used to dissect insects. The insect storage box and insect cabinet are used to store insects. Insect light trap attracts insects with a lamp. The insect net and insect cage are used to trap insects.
