Mattress Size

• The way your pet sleeps may influence the type of mattress that you purchase. Study your pet's sleeping style to determine what kind of bed it will prefer. Pets that like to stretch out when they sleep can be comfortable on a foam mattress that allows them to both curl up and stretch out. When choosing a mattress for your pet, always purchase a size that allows your pet to fully stretch out.

Air Mattresses

• If you're looking for a mattress that is easily transportable and takes up little room while travelling, then an inflatable air mattress might be ideal for your pet. Air mattresses are available in small, medium and large pet sizes. Some manufacturers offer a cover that is machine-washable and a shell that is resistant to puncture by your pet's nails. Pumps for the air mattresses are usually sold separately.

Orthopedic Pet Mattresses

• Many pets develop medical problems with their joints as they age. Animals with ailments such as arthritis or hip dysplasia could benefit from a bed made from special orthopedic foam. This foam offers extra support for your pet and provides relief from sore and aching muscles and joints.

Gold Mattresses

• On the extreme end of the scale, the New York Times reported in 2008 that an Italian company was offering its Gold Mattresses for pets. The covers of these mattresses are woven with 22-karat gold thread. The opulent mattresses are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, to suit any pet with high standards. The manufacturers of the Gold Mattress claim the mattresses are resistant to mites and therefore are ideal for pets. The gold thread pet mattresses were priced between $1,000 and $3,000 and available in several shapes and sizes.
