How to Make a Homemade Canadian Goose Decoy Silhouette

Silhouette decoys are an effective decoy method for Canadian geese hunters. When used properly, the decoys give the illusion of safety in numbers to passing geese, and give the hunter ample opportunity to kill. The 2-D silhouette decoys disappear when geese fly overhead, making the geese perceive movement as they fly over. Using many varieties of geese silhouettes can increase the effectiveness of your decoys, and building them out of plywood makes them sturdy enough to use season after season.

Things You'll Need

24-by-36-inch piece of plywood
Jigsaw
18-inch-long wooden stake
Nails
Hammer
Black matte-finish paint
White matte-finish paint

Instructions

  Draw a goose at rest on the plywood, either freehand or using a pattern. You can also create a pattern of your own on a sheet of paper, making it easier to make multiple decoys at once.

  Cut the goose out of the wood with the jigsaw, once you are happy with your drawing. Be careful to avoid hand or finger injury while using the jigsaw, and always wear eye protection.

  Nail the stake to the bottom of the goose, which you will use to plant the decoy in the ground. Leave about 1 foot of the stake hanging off the bottom.

  Paint one side of the decoy, following a pattern or photographs online using the white and black paints. You can mix the two to create gray, if needed. Do not use a glossy-finish paint, because the shine will destroy the illusion for the geese. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly overnight.

  Repeat Step 4 with the other side of the decoy. You can paint both sides on the same day, but be careful to avoid smudging or damaging the paint on the first side. Hang the decoy in a safe place to dry.
