How to Tie Rope Halter Rings

Halters are necessary if you want to move your horse to a different location. Various styles are available, but most are made with rope and metal rings. The halter slips onto your horse's nose and then buckles at the back of the ears. Some halters have pieces that slide into the horse's mouth for ultimate control. Use a few knots to secure the rope to the rings.

Instructions

    • 1

Heat each of the ends on a 20-foot section of rope with a candle. This will melt the fibers and prevent strands from unwinding when used. You can use mountain climbing rope as halters. It is flexible and soft, so the horse's face can be molded without hurting the animal.

    • 2

Loop the first 8 inches of an end over itself. Hold it in one of your hands and tie an overhand knot with the rope. Make it loose. Pass the folded section of the knot loop over again to make a surgeon's knot (see References). Pull the rope firmly to tighten the knot.

    • 3

Tie another loop 18 inches from the first loop. Tie another knot like the one in Step 2. This will be the halter's nose band, as the two loops run under the muzzle and hold the bit inside the horse's mouth.

    • 4

Place the nose piece over your horse's head. Make sure that the loops are facing down and meet under the horse's chin. Run your free end behind the horse's ears. Thread it through your loop on the other side, holding the halter on the head.

    • 5

Slide the end of your rope through a ring at the top of the bit. Place the bit inside the horse's mouth. Run your rope under the horse's chin and feed it through your ring at the opposite side of the bit. This will stop the animal from spitting it out.

Pass your rope through the last chin ring. Tie a knot immediately above the ring to prevent the halter from loosening. Cut the excess rope with scissors. Clip your reins to the bottom rings to pull the horse.
