DIY Filter Sock Holder

You can make an aquarium filter sock holder out of a PVC pipe fitting in about 10 minutes with a saw to cut the fitting. Tying filter socks on to your piping can be a pain. Using a homemade holder makes changing your filter socks much simpler.

Things You'll Need

The straighter part of the Y will hold the filter sock.

Place the Y on a flat table with the Y upside down. Hold the straight part of the Y firmly into the table and make a cut at the base of the arm that is facing down but not flush with the table. Make this cut the thickness of the tank in which you will be hanging the filter sock holder, and about 3/4 of the way through the Y arm.

A different angle of the Y fitting

With the Y hanging on the side of the tank, cut off half of the upper lip, on the straight part of the Y, leaving a little bit of the flare for the filter sock to sit into. This will act as a splash guard.

With the filter sock holder still hanging on the side of your bilge tank, insert your filter sock into the top of the straight arm of the Y (with the splash guard lip). Direct your bilge pipe into the sock and you are ready to go.
