How to Paint Spearing Decoys

Fish decoys are designed to help fisherman. They lure fish into coming close enough to be speared to hooked. Most fish decoys are made out of wood with special weights attached in order to create movement in the water. The more the decoy looks like the real thing, the more likely it is to attract the fish that are sought.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out your newspaper on a flat, dry surface. This is where you'll paint the decoy.

    • 2

Place the picture of the live fish where you can easily access it. You need to paint your decoy so that it resembles that live fish as much as possible.

    • 3

Pour your paint colors into the palette, mixing as needed.

    • 4

Apply the first paint color to the wooden decoy. Allow it to dry fully before moving on the next color. This will take about a half-hour.

    • 5

Pour the water into the cup. Use this to clean the brushes before proceeding to the next color.

    • 6

Coat the decoy thoroughly with the sealing spray once all of the paint has been applied. Allow the sealer 24 hours to dry completely.
