How to Catch a Bird in a Garage

A bird trapped in your garage should be captured and removed as quickly as possible. Birds create a mess of droppings and shed feathers, and they can come to harm if they get in the way of cars or doors. The procedures used to catch a wild bird -- that has inadvertently entered the garage -- will be different from those used to capture a pet bird that has escaped its cage.

Instructions

  1. Wild Bird in the Garage

    • 1

Leave the garage door open in the hope the bird will fly out. The large opening and sunlight is often enough to cause the bird to leave on its own.

    • 2

Hang a hummingbird feeder near the open garage door, if such is the species trapped in the garage. Hummingbirds often venture into garages because the red-handled door cords look like trumpet-vine flowers. They can be lured out by enticing them with food.

    • 3

Close the garage door and darken all the windows by drawing the curtains. Leave the garage in darkness for a few minutes. Open a side-door into the garage. The bird might recognize the escape route and fly through it.

    Pet Bird in the Garage

    • 4

Set a bowl of the bird's favorite food on the ground, and wait quietly. The bird may come down for the food. You can catch it when it lands.

    • 5

Fill a spray bottle with lukewarm water. Spray the bird. The water weighs down the bird's feathers, causing it to fly more slowly and land.

    • 6

Catch the bird with a towel so that you do not injure it.
