How to Make a Squirrel Feeder With a 2-Liter Bottle

Squirrels are entertaining to watch in your garden. Making a feeder just for them also stops them from knocking bird food off a feeding station to the ground or digging up your garden in search of food. Unlike birds, squirrels don't mind feeding off the ground, but the problem is that what squirrels like to eat, rats do, too. Scattering seeds on the ground can attract vermin. You can make a simple feeder from an empty 2-liter soda bottle, keeping the food off the ground and doing a bit of recycling at the same time.

Things You'll Need

  • Sharp scissors
  • Piece of stiff paper
  • Seeds or nuts
  • 2 feet of strong wire

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse out the soda bottle and leave to dry. Retain the cap.

    • 2

Make five or six dime-sized-or-larger holes on the sides of the bottle near the bottom using one blade of the scissors. The holes need to be slightly bigger than the seeds or nuts you intend to put into the feeder.

    • 3

Turn the bottle over and make a few 1/4-inch holes on the bottom of the bottle.

    • 4

Make two 1/4-inch holes a few inches down from the top, on opposite sides of the bottle.

    • 5

Roll the paper into a rough cone shape and use as a funnel to fill the bottle with seeds or nuts to a level just below the top holes. Put the cap back on.

    • 6

Pass the wire through the two top holes.

    • 7

Attach the feeder to a tree branch near the trunk by twisting the free ends of wire firmly together over the branch.
