How to Plumb a Canister Filter to an Aquarium

Canister filters are among the best for aquariums. A canister filter consists of a canister filled with filter medium and attached to a base-mounted pump. The filter is connected to the aquarium by means of an intake and an outflow hose. This design saves space and improves aesthetics, since the filter can be housed under the aquarium and out of sight inside the stand. The hoses can be attached at the back of the aquarium, or inside via holes that have been drilled in the bottom of the tank.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a canister filter with a pump that is rated for your aquarium's capacity. You can buy them online or from local pet stores.

    • 2

Measure the distance between the area where the canister will be stored and the area where the intake and outflow will be located in the tank.

    • 3

Cut the hoses to the correct length with a utility knife, allowing a little bit of slack. Attach the ends to the fittings and the lid where the intake and outflow nozzles are located. Use hose clamps to ensure a tight, leak-proof fit.
