How to Rig Live Crawfish

Crawfish, also known as crayfish or crawdads, are often used as bait by anglers hoping to catch large- and small-mouth bass and yellow perch. You may have some success catching these creatures if you search along the edges of streams at night. Some fishermen turn over rocks in search of them, while others use traps. The best crawfish to use for fishing are two to three inches long. When you've collected your crawfish bait, keep them fresh in a cooler or minnow bucket, at a temperature under 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the crawfish's claws by cutting them off with a fishing knife. This prevents it from grabbing vegetation and escaping the hook.

    • 2

Insert the hook up through the bottom of the second section of the tail, which is about 1/2 inch to 1 inch in from the end of the tail. This method allows the bait freedom of motion, which attracts fish.

    • 3

Attach a couple of small splitshot to the rig. This ensures the bait will sink to the bottom, its natural habitat.
