Facts About Caiman Habitats

Caimans are small crocodilians found in South and Central America. There are six species, none of which reach more than about 10 feet in length. They prefer wet habitats. Caimans eat progressively larger animals as they grow. Babies feed on invertebrates and small amphibians. Adults tackle larger fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals. Large adult caimans are big enough to overpower wild pigs.
  1. Natural Habitat

    • The natural habitat of caimans consists of wetlands, marshes, rivers, streams, flooded forests and swamps. Most caiman species spend most of their time in water, but also spend varying amounts of time on land.

    Conservation Issues

    • The main issue facing caimans in the wild is habitat destruction, mainly from deforestation for agriculture, infrastructure and hydroelectric projects. Caimans experience additional problems from pollution, hunting and climate change.

    Habitat in Captivity

    • Zoos, animal sanctuaries and private individuals keeping captive caimans must provide an environment as close to their natural habitat as possible. Caimans need a pool to swim in, places to hide and plenty of vegetation.
