Madagascar's Ecosystem

Madagascar has diverse and plentiful ecosystems. The island nation located in the Indian Ocean has over 5 percent of the world's animal and plant species, with over 80 percent being unique to Madagascar.
  1. Tropical Moist Forests

    • Madagascar has a variety of tropical moist forests including coastal rainforests, lowland rainforests, montane rainforests, cloud forests, high elevation scrubs and the Sambirano forest.

    Southern and Western Dry Forests

    • This island nation has a variety of southern and western dry forests, including dry deciduous forests, limestone tsingy formations, the Tapia woodlands and the Spiny forest.

    Secondary (Man-Made) Communities

    • Madagascar has a variety of secondary, or man-made, communities, including the grasslands of the Hauts Plateaux, Palm savanna, Western scrubs and Cactus scrubs.

    Wetlands and Coral Reefs

    • A variety of wetlands can be found in Madagascar, including lakes, marshes, swamps and mangrove forests. The country is also home to coral reefs.
