Considerations
A second function of keratin is its use for growing extensions from the human skin. The two major extensions that utilize keratin are nails and hair.
Examples
Keratin is found in all hair and digital appendages in animals. Whether it is a claw of a hawk or the fur on a bear, keratin makes up all those examples.
Differences
On a chemical level, keratin is split into two families of protein. The more acidic proteins are utilized for animal skin on the epidermis. Non-acidic-based keratin proteins create harder cells. The harder cells are either distributed across the epidermis to create fur or hair, or toward the ends of appendages to create nails, claws, or hooves.
