How to Import Moose Antlers From Canada

It is possible to import clean, dry moose antlers from Canada if you plan ahead and adhere to certain laws and guidelines. Precautions have been put into place because of evidence of disease in some Canadian ruminants. The most significant of these restrictions is a limit of two sets of antlers per person, but even that can be worked around. Make sure you've met the paperwork requirements and safely packed away your treasures.

Provide a current Canadian hunting license authorizing the quantity of animals hunted. This number corresponds to how many antlers you may import. For example, three sets of antlers may be imported if your license allowed for taking three animals. Otherwise, you may import a maximum of two sets of antlers.

Have the required U.S. documentation and pay any import fees. One vital piece of documentation, Form 3-177 from the the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, must be completed accurately. Regulations change often. Check with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service for the most recent forms or policy updates.

Ensure that the antlers are clean enough for importation. Velvet is acceptable, but all skin and other tissues must be removed. If the animal's skull cap is included it must be free of brain tissue. Look for taxidermists who offer this service if you're not confident in your ability to clean the antlers yourself.

Choose your method of transportation. Commercial freight, or other methods primarily used by businesses, is not allowed for antlers destined for your own personal use. There are no restrictions on travel as long as the required documents will be presented upon entry. If you will be flying with the antlers they may be transported in carry-on luggage.
