There are plenty of great programs and classes in Austin, Texas, to keep your children engaged and entertained. Whether you want to do activities as a family or get them involved in sports, there are a number of museums and centers with educational and recreational programming.
  1. Austin Children's Museum

    • The Austin's Children Museum has plenty to keep you and your kids busy. There is more than 12,500 square feet of gallery and program space. The museum offers programs for children up to 11 years of age. The Baby Bloomers and Cub Club are open for children three and under and include activities, such as story time and sing-a-longs. On Sunday's, engineers from National Instruments offer hands-on activities for children of all ages, such as designing paper airplanes, racing balloons and making compasses. The museum offers children's day camps and seasonal activities such as making ginger bread houses.

    Recreation Programs

    • The city of Austin's Parks and Recreation Department provides 20 recreation centers around the city. Children three- to 12-years-old can participate in a variety of programs, such as arts, dance, gymnastics, boxing, team sports leagues, karate, after-school programs and day camps. The McBeth Recreation Center also offers specialized programs for children with special needs.

    Dougherty Arts Center

    • The Dougherty Arts School at the Dougherty Arts Center offers full-day camps for children during the summer and Spring Break. Children ages nine to 12 can take part in the Emerging Artists Series, which is a workshop series of classes "focusing on a single aspect of the fine arts," according to the school's website. There is also a wide variety of classes for younger children ages three to five. EXPLORE is an art-oriented program that lets children make clay sculptures, act, sing and dance. There are only eight students per teacher, so children can get the one-on-one attention they need to succeed.
