How to Hitch a Donkey to a Cart

The results of your working animal's efficiency depends on how well the donkey has been trained, the size of the load and the successful hitching of the donkey to the cart. Prevent injury to the donkey by using the proper equipment. A donkey will refuse to pull a loaded cart if it is too heavy for the donkey to pull.

Instructions

    • 1
A halter is placed over the ears and nose.

Place the halter on the head of your donkey. The halter fits over the ears and nose of the animal, and the sides of the halter should not rub into the eyes or be too tight on the animal's nose. Slide your finger underneath the straps on the side of the halter to check if it is too tight or too loose; there should be slight resistance but not too much.

    • 2

Adjust the fittings on the top of a straight hame collar to fit on your donkey. Undo the bottom fixings of the collar completely before placing it on the donkey. Place the collar securely and comfortably on the donkey's neck. Adjust the bottom fixing between the two hames and connect them together in a centered position.

    • 3

Put a small saddle on the donkey with the saddle centered securely by tightening the belly strap. This will help cushion the weight of the load being carried in the cart and can be adjusted independently if needed.

    • 4

Place a breast band harness on your work animal. The breast strap should be padded to prevent any injury to the donkey from the strap rubbing against the animal's skin while pulling the cart. Adjust the harness by tightening the buckles to fit the donkey. Do not have the harness too loose or to tight on the animal.

    • 5

Tie a rope to the buckle rings on each side of the breast band harness. Tie the rope to the left ring of the breast band harness located at the bottom of the back strap. Tie the left rope to the left end of a swingletree using a clip. The swingletree should be at least 700mm long if not larger, depending on the size of your donkey. Repeat the same process on the right side of the harness. Tie a rope to the center of the swingletree and attach it to the front of the cart.
