What Do Beavers Eat in the Winter?

Beavers are found throughout North America in rivers and lakes, where they can build dams and create ponds that give them access to food. They build winter shelters of sticks and mud that can be accessed only under water, giving them protection from harsh winter weather and predators.

No Meat
- Although they are the largest rodent in North America, beavers are strict vegetarians. They do not eat fish or insects. Their diet changes depending on the season and the availability of their favorite treats, but they always make sure to have a plentiful supply of food on hand for the winter.
Trees
- Sticks and twigs from cottonwood, aspen, birch, willow, alder and other trees are a winter staple. The beavers gather a collection of sticks and leave them at the bottom of their pond for easy access from their winter shelters.
  
  It's common to see several gnawed trees in beaver habitat areas. Bark and leaves are an important food source for beavers.
Roots and Stems
- Aquatic plants, including cattails and pond lilies, have tasty roots and stems for beavers to find under the ice. In mild winters, the beavers may risk a swim to shore to eat fresh woody stems, but this is dangerous as it puts them in the path of predators.
