Types
The most common types of whales off the California coast are the gray whale and the blue whale. Gray whales swim along the Long Beach coastline, and from May through November, the warmer waters attract blue whales, which can grow up to 80 feet in length. Apart from these whales, finback whales and killer whales can be seen, as can large groups of dolphins.
Newport Landing Whale Watching
Huntington Beach's neighboring beach features whale watching tours. During the tour, crew members provide narration and point out different whales. The boat includes a snack bar as well as indoor and outdoor seating. The observation deck provides the opportunity to view whales and take photos.
Considerations
Warmer weather provides opportunities to see more whales, making May through November the best months to plan a trip. The Newport Landing offers two daily trips, and as of September 2010 the prices were $30 for adults and $25 for seniors and children.
