Eating Habits
Prior to the hibernation season, Grizzly bears spend their summers eating both plants and animals. Since they won't eat or drink while they sleep, they need to store a large amount of fat.
Sleep Pattern
Female bears enter their dens earlier, around the middle of November, and may stay in those dens until April or May, especially if they have new cubs. Males often remain outside as late as the end of November or December and can emerge as early as March. However, in colder areas, hibernation can sometimes begin as early as October, and when food is plentiful, some bears may remain active all winter.
Body Changes
Unlike many hibernating animals, whose body temperatures can drop to almost freezing, the Grizzly bear's body temperature only drops four or five degrees. Also, its breathing rate slows down to 50 percent of its normal rate.
