Worldwide Distribution
Around the world, shrews represent a part of the ecosystem in every environment on Earth except polar regions, as stated by the Biology Department at Davidson College. More than 250 species of shrews live around the world, according to the pest control website Cowley's.
Habitats
Shrew habitats range greatly depending upon their location in the world. Shrews usually dwell on the ground, making nests depending upon their current environment. For example, water shrews reside in marshes, swamps and other semi-aquatic regions. The common shrew lives within wooded areas with lots of foliage.
Time of Day
Shrews live mainly nocturnally, meaning they are more active during dark hours. During these hours, they search for food such as worms, insects and small fish in order to keep up with their high metabolic rate.
