How to Convert SCFM to KWH

SCFM (standard cubic feet per minute) is a unit to measure gas flow. KWh (kilowatt per hour) is a method to measure effect. If a flow of natural or biogas is measured in SCFM, and the energy output from the flow (when burned) is measured in kWh, the gas flow can be converted. Since this is a complicated conversion, it is wise to use an Internet-based tool.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency conversion page at epa.gov/lmop/projects-candidates/interactive.html

    • 2

Type in the number of standard cubic feet per minute of gas in the first blank on the page. This will result in a decimal number. For example, if you input 5,000 scfm, you would get 7.2 MWh.

    • 3

Multiply the resulting number by 1,000 to get the KWh result. Following the same example, 1000 x 7.2 = 7,200 KWh.
