How to Make a Pendulum of 3 kg

A pendulum is a weight on the end of a string or rod that can swing freely. According to Carl R. Nave of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Georgia State University, the string or rod must be of "negligible mass" or insignificant weight. Make a 3 kg pendulum to assist you with science or math study, or for practical purposes such as making a dynamic impactor test rig.

Instructions

    • 1

Calculate the available space you have to mount your pendulum before deciding on its length. Cut a piece of light but strong string to the approximate length you want your pendulum to be, allowing for the length of the weight and a little extra for tying knots.

    • 2

Tie the string securely around your hanging point. Use a non-slip bowline, often referred to as the king of knots.

    • 3

Tie the string around the hanger of your weight securely using the same kind of knot.

    • 4

Swing your pendulum by pushing or pulling it from its hanging position, then releasing it.
