HVAC Exhaust Systems
Exhaust vents and the equipment of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems are commonly found on rooftops. Large buildings need HVAC systems to regulate temperature and humidity, ensuring that occupants are breathing fresh and clean air while inside the building. Heavy-duty HVAC systems often use large machines and exhaust vents. Rooftops remain common installation locations since they are one of the few open spaces large enough to accommodate the equipment.
Helipads
Large buildings and skyscrapers often include a helipad to accommodate helicopter landings. In some places, including Los Angeles, having a helipad on buildings that are more than 75 feet high is a local government requirement. Helipads provide an emergency landing area and also a place to rescue occupants in case a fire occurs inside the building.
Solar Panels
Solar panels can perform at their peak when installed on rooftops because it can harness the sun's heat without any obstructions. Green buildings --- buildings designed to help protect the environment and conserve energy --- often have solar panels installed on their rooftops to generate extra electricity and support the building's energy needs.
Gardens
Some developers of green buildings install and maintain gardens on rooftops by creating garden beds, installing a drainage system, and adding soil to the rooftop's pavement to accommodate plants. Rooftop garden's require consistent maintenance, and one large benefit is the direct sunlight that plants are able to receive. Gardens on top of buildings not only add aesthetic value, but can also help in cooling down the building.
