How to Remove Lime From Fossils

Fossils are preserved remains of plants or animals from a past geological age. Fossils typically are preserved in dirt or rock and can be a valuable source of information or interest for many people. When you find a fossil, it may have mineral scale on it that has developed over time. It's possible to remove the lime from fossils by using some basic household cleaning items, but you should clean fossils carefully to avoid damaging them.

Things You'll Need

  • Dish washing liquid
  • Shallow pan
  • Soft brush
  • Sponge
  • Limescale cleaner
  • Soft cleaning cloth(s)

Instructions

      Fill a shallow pan with warm water and a few drops of dish washing liquid.

      Place the fossil into the sudsy water. Use a soft brush or sponge to gently wipe the fossil's surface. Do not rub, scrape or scrub, as this may damage the fossil.

      Lift the fossil out of the soapy water and gently pat it dry with a clean, dry cloth.

      Dampen a clean, soft cloth with limescale cleaner, which is available at most hardware or grocery stores.

      Use the cloth to carefully blot at the fossil to remove any remaining lime. Pat dry the fossil with a clean, soft cloth.
