Preparation
Research mammoth sites. Look for maps or information on areas where actual mammoth bones and fossils have been found. Areas where mammoth remains have been located could be areas where Indians hunted mammoths, and therefore could be areas where you could find arrowheads.
After locating some mammoth kill sites, contact either the land owner, the local law enforcement department, or a park ranger to inquire about whether arrowhead hunting is allowed there. If hunting for arrowheads is allowed, get written permission and find out whether a permit or fee is required. If the mammoth kill site is a state or national park, find out its hours of operation.
Plan enough time for driving. Bring a change of clothing, and wear work-style clothes that can be dirtied while digging. Bring protective gloves for your hands, and pack your digging tools: trowel or shovel and bucket. Bring along a sack lunch or snacks and plenty of drinking water to stay hydrated.
Arrowhead Hunting Expedition
Upon arrival at the hunting site, check with the property owner or authorities and let them know you are there, to make sure you have appropriate permissions. If you need to pay for a pass or permit at the site, do so then. For safety purposes, confirm the site location where you will be doing your arrowhead hunting.
Once you make it to the arrowhead hunting location, look for arrowheads close to areas alongside paths or trails. If you see signs of broken pottery shards or other indications that there may have been Indian camps there, those are good locations to hunt for arrowheads. Newly disturbed earth or dirt areas, where other digs might have occurred, and areas near creek beds where mammoth may have stopped to drink are other good places to look.
Once you find a spot that looks like there may be arrowheads or indicates a hunt that occurred in that area, bend down and start digging. Sift through piles of dirt with your fingers and hands, and feel for arrowheads that could possibly be hidden in clumps of earth. If you don't find any arrowheads right away, don't give up. Keep searching until you do, or move on to a different location.
