How to Hook Up a Wet-Dry Filter in an Aquarium

Although installing a wet-dry filter may be difficult for many aquarium owners, their filtration system makes them one of the most valued biological filters on the market. Aquarium owners interested in improving their aquarium's filtration with a wet-dry filter shouldn't be intimidated by the installation process. With the right know-how, most aquarium owners can hook up their own wet-dry aquarium filter.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble the main filter by sliding the protein skimmer into the skimmer pump. Place the newly assembled main filter under the aquarium stand.

    • 2

Place the pre-filter box inside the siphon overflow box to assemble the pre-filter. Hang the pre-filter on the back of the aquarium.

    • 3

Connect the pre-filter to the main filter by attaching one end of the spiral drain hose to the slip-fitting of the pre-filter, and the other end to the bulkhead of the main filter.

    • 4

Attach a collection container to the main filter bulkhead, connecting them with vinyl tubing.

    • 5

Attach one end of a three to four foot long stretch of vinyl tubing to the other side of the collection container.

    • 6

Plug the other end of the vinyl tubing into a return pump (sold separately) and slide the return pump onto the edge of the aquarium, making sure the mouth of the pump is submerged in the water. The return pump will distribute filtered water throughout the aquarium.
