The History of a Trapper Pocket Knife

The popular style of pocket knife called the trapper has two blades: one a sharp, curved clip point and the other blunt spey blade. The compact trapper is found in the pocket of many hunters and do-it-yourselfers for everything from simple knife chores to skinning animals.
  1. The Clip Point Function

    • A clip point blade can penetrate tight spaces.

A clip point blade, which is found on many styles of pocket knives, is a curved, thin blade that can penetrate tight spaces. It can slice, hollow and pierce with ease, which makes it useful to hunters.

    Uses of the Spey

    • The spey blade is ideal for skinning animals.

Because the blunted spey blade isn't designed to penetrate or puncture, it's good for neutering animals so they don't lose much blood and for skinning animals. Although the spey is rarely used for neutering today, it still is found on almost every type of pocket knife today.

How the Trapper Got Its Name

    • The trapper knife got its name from its use by hunters to skin animals. A hunter or trapper found the duel blades to be the proper tools for skinning and gutting the animal.
