How to Buy Coyote Pelts

Once considered pests with useless hides, coyote fur/pelts became popular when wolf fur could not longer be used for commercial purposes. Coyote pelts are durable, thick and warm. The furs are usually pale grey or tan with a paler underfur. The hairs are long and luxurious and are very resilient. The pelts can be used for decoration, accents, bags, hats, coats and other garments. They can be bought from speciality shops, fur emporiums, private dealers and even online. It is best, however, to see and feel the coyote pelt before you buy it.

Instructions

    • 1

Go see the coyote pelt you are interested in. Look at the fur and see if its fur shimmers. The pelt should also feel flexible.

    • 2

Rub the fur to feel its thickness and to see that the underfur is there under the top hairs. The underfur should have a glossy sheen. The hairs should not feel sharp or coarse.

    • 3

Hang the pelt and check to see if the hair of the fur all hang uniformly.

    • 4

Check the price of the pelt. The average coyote pelt was selling for $20 to $30 in the summer of 2008 and prices continued to drop in 2009 because of weaker demand and high inventory. Higher grade coyote pelts have sold upwards of $160.
