Egypt
The pyramids of Egypt were tombs for the pharaohs. They were constructed from limestone bricks. The number of workers required for the task is uncertain, but estimates range from 2,000 to as many as 300,000.
Nubia
The kings of Nubia built pyramids that were reminiscent of the Egyptian style. However, they were smaller and had much steeper sides. Nubian pyramids also featured a connected chapel.
Mesoamerican
The pyramids of Mesoamerica were built in the step style. They were built as sites or worship and ritual, as well as tombs for the kings and nobility. Mesoamerican pyramids were also useful as landmarks between different cities, as they could be seen above the forests due to their great height.
Cahokia
Some native cultures of North America also made pyramid-like structure. These were mounded earthworks instead of the classic pyramid. They were built for religious and sometimes burial functions.
Bosnia
The town of Visoko in Bosnia is thought to have the only recorded pyramid in Europe. However, there is debate as to whether or not the structure is in fact a pyramid or merely another type of large structure that has come to resemble a pyramid over time.
