Things You'll Need
Instructions
Determine what area of archaeology interests you (cultures, area of the world, artifacts) and study that subject area. Subscribe to archaeology magazines and journals. Keep current on the newest advances in research and discoveries.
Research digs that allow volunteers to participate. Archaeology involves a lot of physical labor and dirty work and many archaeological digs allow volunteers to help cover this need for labor.
Get digging. Once you find an archaeological excavation, remember that you are a volunteer and not the expert. Do not take anything you find. Your job is merely to help out at a dig, which can be a lot of fun.
Be prepared to get very, very dirty. Archaeology excavation is an outdoor activity, so be prepared to spend long hours in the sun. Wear old clothing and protect yourself with sunscreen and a good hat.
Your duties as a volunteer at an archaeological dig may include excavating, sifting excavated dirt to find smaller artifacts, cleaning artifacts, or writing field notes. Do any and all activities with enthusiasm and precision so that you will be invited back again. Who knows what you will discover?
