What Are the Meanings of the Pages in Tarot?

Tarot cards are used by believers to predict the future and gain insight into currently occurring events. A standard tarot card deck contains 78 cards, with 22 cards in the Major Arcana and 56 cards in the Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana contains cards that don't have suits, such as The Lovers and The Hanged Man. The Minor Arcana are split into four suits (swords, wands, cups and pentacles). Each suit has 14 cards: 10 numbered and 4 "face" cards. Pages are among the face cards.
  1. Page of Wands

    • The Page of Wands card depicts a young man who looks up at a tall, blooming wooden staff he holds. His clothing bears a print of salamanders and he stands in the desert. This imagery represents optimism (looking up and youthfulness), change or growth (blooming staff) and not losing oneself (desert). The desert and the salamanders also represent the element of fire, which is attached to the suit of wands. The card thus has meanings of opportunities for growth, a renewal of optimism and hope and/or of remembering the self.

    Page of Pentacles

    • The Page of Pentacles features a young man who walks between plowed land and blooming trees and flowers but stares only at a large golden disk in his hands. The curiosity of the page in examining the coin, while between a land ready for planting and a land already bloomed, represents the opportunities for learning. The type of learning could be spiritual, practical or even the creation of new dreams.

    Page of Cups

    • The Page of Cups is a young man dressed in floral printed attire and a scarf, who holds a golden cup with a fish inside and wears boots for protection against the water behind him. His clothing hints at a bohemian nature and thus creativity and artistic pursuits. The fish often represents the spirit or inner self in mythology. His surprise at the fish's presence in his cup symbolizes accepting surprises as they come.

    Page of Swords

    • The Page of Swords stands on rocky ground with his sword in the air towards the clouds overhead. There are trees and water in the background and a strong wind blowing through. The expression of the young man is attentive and ready. He stands in somewhat of a battle stance. The element of the swords suit is air, represented in the wind on the card. This card tends to represent the turbulent process of learning, replacing new ideas with old and seeking out answers.
