How to Create My Own Birth Chart

Astrology is an ancient art based on the astronomical observations of planetary and celestial body positions at a particular point in time. If you know your date and time of birth and where you were born, you can create a basic astrology drawing called the natal or birth chart. Today, you needn't spend hours deducing numbers because astrology software is readily available -- this makes quick work of gathering the important data you will need to make your chart.

Things You'll Need

  • Astrology books or software
  • Drawing paper
  • Pencils
  • Eraser
  • Compass and protractor
  • Colored pens

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install an astrology program. There are many types, so you may have to spend some time choosing what you will want to use. Astrolog is a free version, and you can find others. Alternatively, you can find books online or in bookstores and libraries that have tables -- these require mathematics to find the details that you will need to create the chart.

    • 2

Write down the positions to include the degrees and minutes of each planet's position. Include the moon and sun, and the ascendant -- what was rising on the horizon the moment you were born. Also note the houses each of the celestial bodies was in and the sign pertaining to that planet.

    • 3

Draw a circle -- this is more precisely done with a compass, however you can do a rough version, or turn a large bowl upside down and trace the outer edge onto your paper. Make an outer ring around the circle about an inch out. Divide the circle (including the outer ring) into equal halves, and divide each half into six equal "pie" pieces. The pie slices are 30 degrees each, totaling 180 above the central divider and 180 below.

    • 4

In the space between the outer line and inner circle, enter the names or signs that were in each "house." If it helps, number the houses close to the center: Starting on the left just below the center dividing line is the first house. Continue counterclockwise to House 6, which is the last one on the lower half of the circle. Houses 7 through 12 are above the central dividing line, entered also counterclockwise until House 12 is just atop House 1. If you have Virgo in the 2nd house, draw the symbol for Virgo (refer to your astrology materials) and mark the appropriate 30 degree section that includes Virgo. (Refer to sample charts for how this looks.) Continue this for each of the house designations.

    • 5

Enter the locations of the planets within each house in the inner circle, according to the information you gathered from the books or software. If, for example, Saturn is in the 9th house, place the symbol for Saturn in the inner circle where you have drawn Aries over the 9th house area. Continue to place each planet in its appropriate location.

Add lines for trines, sextiles, squares and so forth, as per your data. This begins to get a little more complicated, so study further into the subject to be able to place the lines appropriately. These are not necessary, but they do give a more full visual result.
