How to Cast a Vedic Astrological Chart

Vedic astrology has its roots in Indian myth and legend and it dates back seven thousand years. When the method began, it involved only the movements of the planets in respect to the stars, but modern Vedic astrology encompasses both the movement of the planets and the signs of the zodiac. The system is very complex and is broken into many different types and categories, but as long as you know a few basic facts about a person's birthday and have some astronomical resources, you can cast a Vedic astrological chart. (see References 1 and 2)

Things You'll Need

  • Birthday details, including exact date and time
  • Birthplace details, including longitude and latitude
  • Resource (book or online) that details the location of the planets in relation to constellations on certain dates
  • Map or globe with longitude and latitude

Instructions

    • 1
Most globes have longitude and latitude marked on them.

Determine the exact time of birth of the questioner to the hour and minute. Find the exact longitude and latitude of their birthplace using a map or globe.

    • 2

Determine the lagna (ascendant, or rising sign), the birth star (Nakshatra), moon sign (the constellation where the moon was located), and what planets will influence the dasha and antardasha using the birthday and birthplace.

    • 3

Start the astrological chart by drawing a square that is framed by 12 smaller squares. Write the names of the constellations counterclockwise starting with the oldest (Pisces) in the top left hand corner, and ending with Aries.

    • 4

Cast the chart by organizing what planets were in what constellations at the time of the questioner's birth. For example, if that person was born with the moon sign Gemini in the year 1976, they would have the Sun, Moon and Venus under the sign Gemini.

    • 5

Fill in the rest of the chart, writing in multiple planets in a single box if you need to. Leave some spaces on the chart blank if needed.
