Earth Characteristics in Chinese Zodiac Signs

Each Chinese sign of the zodiac consists of two parts -- an element to represent the years you were born and an animal to represent the month. The Chinese zodiac is made up of five elements -- earth, fire, wood, metal and water. Legend says that Buddha named a month after each of the 12 animals that accepted his invitation to a New Year celebration, in the order they arrived.

Earth Rat (1948, 2008) and Earth Ox (1949 and 2009)
- While other rats are very spontaneous, the earth rat prefers a more thoughtful approach. He has a strong work ethic, ensuring a successful future for himself and his family. The earth ox is very sincere, honest, fair and kind and has true, lasting friendships. He is also very good with his finances.
EarthTiger (1938, 1998) and Earth Rabbit (1939, 1999)
- Earth tigers keep their feet on the ground, working hard and setting high, but realistic, goals. They are independent, self-confident, faithful, thoughtful and passionate. Earth rabbits are very honest, sometimes to the point of sounding harsh. Hard-working and serious, they get bored easily, but have fantastically romantic relationships.
Earth Dragon (1928, 1988) and Earth Snake (1929, 1989)
- The earth dragon is level-headed, rational and a good decision-maker. Used to being admired by his peers, he is kind, supportive and will be a friend for life. The earth snake is a calm, deep-thinking and approachable person. Very quick to help the needy, he can be a little cautious when it comes to relationships.
Earth Horse (1918, 1978) and Earth Goat (1919, 1979)
- The earth horse is very tolerant, never judging or showing cynicism. He works hard and enjoys the finer things in life, but he is very unhappy without love. The earth goat is sensible and serious, while also being sociable, fun-loving and enthusiastic. Dedicated and hard-working, he makes a caring and gentle partner.
Earth Monkey (1908, 1968) and Earth Rooster (1909, 1969)
- The earth monkey is shrewd and optimistic. He cares greatly about others. He is dependable and expects the same in return. Analytical and philosophical, the earth rooster is an efficient problem-solver and motivated by success. They are very patient and enjoy stable, loving relationships.
Earth Dog (1958, 2018) and Earth Pig (1959, 2019)
- Confident and self-assured, the earth dog is well-grounded, driven and focused on perfection. He is relaxed about relationships, but becomes the perfect partner when he finds the right person. Caring and gentle, the earth pig is also highly career-minded, but not much of a leader. The earth pig has no trouble winning people over.
